Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, 06/26/62, Manoel Francisco dos Santos, known as Garrincha, plays with the Mainá bird that he received as a gift from the governor of Guanabara, Carlos Lacerda. Mané Garrincha passed away on January 20, 1983. 2008 marked the 25th anniversary of his death.

The duel between the 1970 Brazilian champion team and a combination of foreigners, on December 19, 1973, became known as the “game of gratitude” to Garrincha. The proceeds were donated to Mané. At 40 years old, the athlete was on the field in the first half hour of the match and was applauded by more than 150 thousand fans present at Maracanã.

Last year, in “Memória da Pan”, I highlighted that TV Gazeta de São Paulo had already shown the first half of the game numerous times, won by Brazil 2-1, but had never shown the entirety of the final stage. However, this month, a rarity finally appeared: the complete duel with narration by Fernando Solera, from TV Bandeirantes. During the match, Solera explains that the broadcast was carried out in conjunction with Record, still owned by the Carvalho family. However, only Band professionals held the microphone that day: in addition to Solera, the station had comments from Luiz Augusto Maltoni and reports from Chico de Assis.

The Brazilian goals came from Pelé, who gave a gala performance, and Luís Pereira. The foreign team took the lead, with Argentine Brindisi, but Zagallo’s men turned the score around. The recording is worth the originality of the entire match and Fernando Solera’s brilliant narration.
