There is a bit of a custom in Austrian films of exoticizing oneself and thus dehumanizing oneself. Dark forests, oppressive Catholicism, exhibited brutality, people drinking, a cynicism towards people and the occasional cabaret insult come to mind as leitmotifs. This is well received, at least internationally, and yet it is also tiring.
