Lajes Base with large movement of American aircraft
The Lajes Base registered a greater movement of US military aircraft this Wednesday, according to Agência Lusa, which was on site.
The agency states that, during the afternoon of this Wednesday, 11 KC-46 Pegasus refuelers, 12 F-16 Viper fighters and a C-17 Globemaster III military freighter were parked at the base on the island of Terceira, in the Azores, and states that, in the same period, some American fighters took off and landed again.
Lusa contacted the Portuguese Ministry of Defense, the US Air Force at Lajes Base and the Departments of State and Defense, but only received a response from the latter.
“US European Command regularly receives US aircraft and military personnel in transit, in accordance with access, basing and overflight agreements with allies and partners. Given the operational security of US assets and personnel, it is not possible to release further details at this time,” the Pentagon told the agency in a written message.
According to experts interviewed by CNN Portugal, which you can see and hear in the videos at the top of this article, it could be a sign that the US is preparing an attack on Iran. “I worry that Portuguese territory is being used for maneuvers that aim to implement Trump’s strategy”, says CNN Portugal commentator Marcos Farias Ferreira in one of these videos.
