The Second District region is the most violent in Rio Branco, show figures from Sejusp

Of the 73 violent deaths recorded in Rio Branco from January to last Monday, December 16, 2024, 11 of them were recorded in the Taquari neighborhood, in the Second District of the capital of Acre. The first homicide record in the neighborhood in 2024 was in the second month of the year.

On the night of February 22, a young couple who had recently moved to Travessa Rio Branco, in Taquari, were approached by criminals linked to the factions that operate in the neighborhood. Although he said he did not belong to any faction, the boy, identified as Fábio Júnior do Nascimento Pimentel, aged 24, ended up murdered by men who asked him which neighborhood he came from and whether he belonged to a criminal faction.

Five months later, in the early hours of June 22, around eight criminals invaded a drinks distributor, which also operates as a grocery store on Rua Baguari, also in Taquari, and shot dead Luiz Afonso da Cunha, aged 47, and Adálio by Aguiar Fernandes, 48.

Still in the Taquari neighborhood, three months later, a man identified as Jeferson dos Santos, aged 35, was shot dead on the afternoon of September 18, in Travessa Morada do Sol.

These three occurrences are a summary of 11 similar cases recorded in Taquari throughout the year. All these murders make Taquari the most violent neighborhood in the capital.

The numbers, released this Tuesday afternoon (17), are from the Statistics Division of the State Secretariat of Justice and Public Security (Sejusp-AC). Taquari alone has almost double the cases of the two neighborhoods that appear second in terms of violence – Belo Jardim II and Cidade do Povo, with six deaths each.

The other 10 neighborhoods with the highest homicide rate in Rio Branco are:

  • Industrial District – 5 deaths;
  • Beautiful Garden I – 4 deaths;
  • Santa Ines – 3 deaths;
  • University – 2 deaths;
  • Santa Helena Subdivision – 2 deaths;
  • Rosa Linda Residential – 2 deaths;
  • Recanto dos Buritis – 2 deaths.

Even with a lower number, several neighborhoods neighboring the Cidade do Povo complex appear among the 10 with the most homicides, as is the case of Residencial Rosa Linda and Loteamento Santa Helena. There is also geographic proximity between other regions on the list, such as Belo Jardim I and II, Santa Inês and Recanto dos Buritis.

The numbers show that, in terms of violence, the region of the Second District of Rio Branco is the worst place to live in the capital.

Across the capital, there were 73 homicides recorded in Rio Branco until Monday. The index, however, means a reduction of 26.26% compared to the same period in 2023, which ended with 99 intentional violent deaths.

Sejusp points to drug trafficking and organized crime as the main public security challenges in Acre. The study “Cartographies of Violence in the Amazon”from the Brazilian Public Security Forum, revealed that all municipalities in Acre have the presence of a criminal faction, and at least 18 municipalities in Acre have the majority presence of just one of them.

Across the state, there were 150 homicides as of this Monday. This total also represents a reduction compared to last year, which ended with 180 deaths. After Rio Branco, the municipalities with the most homicides are Feijó (17) and Tarauacá (15).
