Among the possible casualties is the leader of the PSD in Alesp, deputy Paulo Correa Jr.
The dispute between the PL and PSD parties for the vice-president spot on Governor Tarcísio de Freitas’s (Republican) ticket for re-election has had repercussions in the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo (Alesp). After attacks on PSDB’s toucans for , the PSD, chaired by Gilberto Kassab, is at risk of losing two members.
Among the possible casualties is the leader of the PSD in Alesp, deputy Paulo Correa Jr. He is currently in advanced negotiations with the PL, a party led by Valdemar Costa Neto, but was also approached by other acronyms. Among the reasons given is the “congestion” of members in Kassab’s party, increasingly expanded with new members.
“We are at the moment of several conversations and speculations. I have not yet spoken to our leader, Kassab, to see what the party will be like here in my region [litoral Sul de São Paulo]. But I will analyze all the possibilities regarding the tickets”, Correa Jr told the column. The expectation is that he will make a decision by the first half of April.
“Every election is difficult and we have to be prepared for the dispute. By then, I will have a clearer view of the party’s vision in my region and then, yes, I will make the best decision”, he continued.
In addition to him, deputy Oseias de Madureira (PSD) also negotiates with the PL. Conversations have been conducted with the president of Alesp, André do Prado (PL).
If the two casualties are confirmed, Kassab’s party will put the brakes on negotiations to expand its bench in the House. Currently, the PSD has four parliamentarians, a number that could reach 11 with the membership of six tucanos and a deputy from Cidadania. Today, the PL has the largest bench, with 20 state deputies — a number that it also seeks to expand in the pre-election scenario.
A party leader describes the scenario as a “game of musical chairs”, as many PSD members express fear of a lack of space for future candidacies. Even the Sports Secretary of the São Paulo government, Colonel Helena Reis (Republicans), received, in recent days, an invitation from Kassab to transfer to the PSD — she intends to compete for a position as state deputy. The internal assessment is that this “avalanche” of affiliations could cause a stampede, with candidates seeking better positioning in the formation of slates for the next elections.
In addition to the movements in the Assembly, the party led by Kassab recorded growth in the interior of São Paulo. In 2024, the party elected 206 mayors among the 645 municipalities of São Paulo, followed by the PL, with 104.
Fight for vice
HAS Young Pan, the president of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, to guarantee the vice-president spot on Tarcísio’s ticket. Among the arguments used is the fact that the party has the largest bench in Alesp. The post would go to André do Prado — who, as the column revealed,
The current vice-governor, Felício Ramuth (PSD), however, wants to remain in office, but faces internal resistance from Kassab, who is also asking for space in the composition. Until the end of March, and the vice-governorship.
