Unique event: largest total solar eclipse in 114 years will be visible in Portugal

This year, Portugal will witness a unique phenomenon: the largest total solar eclipse in many years. The next one should only occur in 2144.

The largest total eclipse of the Sun in the last 114 years will be visible in Portugal on August 12, 2026.

It will present a concealment between 92% and 100%but the only place in the country where it will be possible to observe the phenomenon in its entirety is the Montesinho Natural Park area, in Bragança.

At around 7:30 pm, on August 12th, and during the height of the eclipse lasting 26 seconds, the day turns into night in the northeast of Trás-os-Montes, although the entire event takes a few minutes.

In the rest of the continental territory and in the autonomous regions, the eclipse will be partial, but still with a very significant occultation of the Sun.

The last total eclipse visible in Portugal occurred in 1912 and the The next one should only occur in 2144making this a unique event.

The eclipse will only be visible in a narrow band that runs across the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, Spain and Portugal.
