An avalanche buried a man in the area of the Merano 2000 ski resort in South Tyrol in the northeast of the country. The Italian mountain rescue service said that a number of rescuers had rushed to the scene, however the man was found without signs of life.
Another avalanche hit the Alpine valley of Aosta near the border with Switzerland. Mountain rescue teams discovered the dead body of a skier here at an altitude of 3,000 meters. According to the authorities, his disappearance was reported by his relatives. The nationality of both victims is not yet known.
In recent days, heavy snowfall and rain have caused an extremely dangerous avalanche situation in alpine winter resorts. In Austria, France, Switzerland and northern Italy, authorities have repeatedly reported deaths from avalanches. At least seven people have died since Friday in Austria alone.
