Italian Chamber approves extension of deadline for minor children to apply for citizenship

The Italian Chamber of Deputies approved this Monday (23) the extension of the deadline for minor children of Italians born outside the country to request recognition of citizenship. The proposal received 177 votes in favor and 93 against and now goes to the Senate for analysis.

In practice, the measure postpones the limit for submitting the application at Italian consulates from May 31 of this year to May 2029. The change benefits minor descendants born abroad before the new citizenship law came into force, approved in 2025.

The amendment changes Law 74/2025, which reformulated the rules for granting Italian citizenship through the so-called “right of blood”. This legislation restricted automatic recognition only to children and grandchildren of Italians, excluding more distant generations.

Under current rules, the right is recognized when the father, mother, grandfather or grandmother exclusively maintains Italian citizenship — or maintained it at the time of death. There may also be recognition if the father, mother or adoptive guardians have resided in Italy for at least two consecutive years after acquiring citizenship and before the birth or adoption of the child.

If the Senate confirms the Chamber’s decision, the new deadline of 2029 will officially come into effect.
