Luís Montenegro surprised again, when he pulled out the director of the Judiciary Police to promote him to Minister of Internal Administration. It was not an innocent choice. Luís Neves has been making statements over the last year that contradict, first and foremost, Chega and André Ventura’s speech on immigration and crime. But these statements were also being read as contradicting the position of the Government and the Prime Minister itself, based on perceptions of insecurity that were not real. Will the future minister be just a “shield” who will have to take over the prime minister’s positions? Or does it represent a change in the tightening of speeches and policies on immigration and security? Only time will tell. Opinions are not unanimous in the Political Committee.
