The Algarve is once again highlighted on the international tourist scene: a Portuguese beach entered the top 5 worldwide in TripAdvisor’s annual ranking, which distinguishes the sands best rated by travelers from all over the world. The classification is the result of evaluations left over 12 months and places Portugal between tropical destinations and exotic islands.
According to Ekonomista, a website specializing in economics and current affairs, which cites the Travelers’ Choice Awards Best of the Best 2026, only 1% of the platform’s listings achieve this distinction. The global ranking brings together 24 beaches spread across four continents, based on the quality and consistency of user reviews.
Portugal is present with an Algarve beach that is no stranger to this type of recognition.
A recurring presence among the best
The distinguished beach is Praia da Falésia, located between Olhos d’Água, in the municipality of Albufeira, and Vilamoura, in the municipality of Loulé. The sand occupies fifth place worldwide in the 2026 edition, maintaining the position achieved in the previous year.
According to Ekonomista, Praia da Falesia even topped the global ranking in 2024. In 2025 and 2026 it remains among the top five, consolidating its presence among travelers’ favorites.
The platform highlights the impressive cliffs, the length of the sand strip and the variety of experiences available, from sea bathing to walks along the panoramic cliff-top trails.
Unique geology and striking landscape
In addition to tourist recognition, the beach is also referenced for its geological value. According to the Algarvensis Geoparque, cited by the same publication, it is a unique sandy cliff on the Algarve coast, with records that testify to the paleoenvironmental evolution of millions of years.
The contrast between the reddish tones of the upper layers and the lighter sands at the base of the cliffs gives the landscape an easily recognizable visual identity.
About six kilometers long, Praia da Falésia also offers support infrastructure and services that make it accessible to different visitor profiles.
Third best beach in Europe
In the European classification, the Algarve beach comes in third place, just behind Elafonissi and Balos Lagoon, both in Greece.
According to , in this edition of the European ranking of the ten best beaches, Falésia is the only Portuguese representative, reinforcing the Algarve’s leading role in the beach tourism segment.
A competitive global top 5
The world ranking is led by Isla Pasión, in Mexico. Next are Elafonissi and Balos Lagoon, in Crete, and Eagle Beach, in Aruba. Praia da Falésia closes the group of the five best.
According to the publication, the Albufeira Promotion Agency considers this distinction a strategic asset for the international promotion of the destination, in a context of strong global competition.
Despite the recognition, authorities recall the importance of caution in cliff areas, given the coastal erosion that has been monitored by the Portuguese Environment Agency, especially after recent storm episodes.
The new distinction puts the Algarve back in the international spotlight. In a ranking dominated by tropical destinations, a Portuguese beach remains among travelers’ favorites, consolidating its status as one of the main visiting cards of national tourism.
