Traveling on a cruise means complying with a set of specific rules on board, especially with regard to safety, and not all passengers are aware that some common everyday objects can be blocked before even entering the ship.
A travel enthusiast known on social media as “traveltipsbylaurie”, who has more than 300 thousand followers on Instagram, warned about a frequent mistake made by those who are going on a cruise: taking traditional electrical extension cords in their suitcase.
In one of the videos published, Laurie explains that many passengers are unaware that extension cords with surge protection, known as “emergency protectors”, are prohibited on most ships, according to the British newspaper Daily Express.
Electrical risk on board
According to the content creator, these extensions are often confiscated upon boarding. The reason is related to the specific electrical system of cruise ships, which is different from that of homes.
Overvoltage protection components can pose a risk of overheating, tripping of circuit breakers and even a fire hazard when connected to the ship’s electrical network.
For this reason, companies include this type of equipment on lists of prohibited objects, according to the same source.
What is allowed to take
The influencer explains that, in many cases, simple extensions are allowed, without a surge protection system. These are usually referred to as “non-surge protective power strips”.
USB chargers with multiple ports, as long as they do not include high-voltage outlets, are also usually authorized. Still, it is recommended to always confirm the cruise company’s specific rules before traveling, as policies may vary.
May be confiscated but returned
If the prohibited extension is detected during baggage inspection, the ship’s staff will retain it. The object is identified and stored, and returned to the passenger upon disembarkation.
In the comments of the publication, several users admitted that they were unaware of this rule. Some reported, cited by , that they had already experienced the situation and confirmed that the equipment was taken from them at the entrance of the ship.
There are also companies that adopt even more restrictive policies. Some passengers report that certain operators do not allow any cable extensions, only allowing adapters that fit directly into the socket. Given these rules, anyone embarking on a cruise should carefully review the list of prohibited objects before packing their suitcase, to avoid delays or apprehensions at the beginning of the trip.
