March is the third month of the year, considered special because nature comes to life then. The days are getting longer and spring is in the air. Calendar spring in Poland always begins on March 21 and is associated with many ancient superstitions and rituals. The most famous of them concerns the drowning of an effigy symbolizing the Slavic goddess of winter, Marzanna.
However, it is worth mentioning that it falls in March a day considered extraordinary by all those who believe in superstitions. It’s about March 15, the Ides of March.
The Ides of March (Latin: Idus Martiae) in the Roman calendar simply marked the middle of the month of March. March 15 was the grand celebration of Mars, the god of war. On this occasion, military parades and army reviews were held.
This date went down in history mainly because of the death of Julius Caesar, who was killed on March 15, 44 BC by a group of senators. According to legend, a clairvoyant had previously warned him about this date. However, these warnings were ignored.
March 15 began to be associated with misfortune and doom. This was immortalized in William Shakespeare’s tragedy Julius Caesar. There is a sentence said by a fortune teller: “Beware of the Ides of March”, which popularized the superstition.
For centuries, March 15 was considered… unlucky, but this was confirmed by numerous disasters and misfortunes that occurred at that time. Examples include the blizzard of the century in 1941 in the USA, the collapse of the New World hotel in Singapore in 1986 or the disaster at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan in 2011. There are, of course, many more such accidents.
Therefore, it is worth paying attention to this date and, especially on March 15, be careful on the road and at home. You can also use proven ways to ward off bad luck, such as throwing a pinch of salt over your left shoulder or placing a pinch of salt under the doormat to protect your home from bad luck and misfortune.
