Loss of 16 million in Almada. If they stabilize the cliff, it will increase to 160 million

Risk of new landslides in Costa da Caparica: the land has dried out, blocks of stones may fall. But moving the cliff is not just a local issue.

O bad weather of the last few weeks originated overthrown in various locations, including cliff of Costa da Caparicaem Almada. And the risk of new landslides there remains.

The earth, which had become soggy from so much rain, has dried up, or is dry now. Now they arise slits – e blocks of stones may fallaccording to a report from the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC).

The new report, cited in , was made after a visit to the field a week ago. Experts saw earth movements and landslides.

According to the same document, in Porto Brandão land that is not stabilized was identified; there is slits “of great development” in walls and floors, there are slips and problems in support walls.

Therefore, and for now, it is not advisable for residents to return home (almost 300 people had to leave their homes in Almada).

LNEC suggests land support structures, land drainage, replacing sand on the beaches and rehabilitating some of the buildings damaged by the storms.

Calm

Inês de Medeiros, president of Almada City Council, said that it is important to be reasonable in what we are going to do: “The cliff is a heritage that we really like and, therefore, It will be necessary to have some reasonableness in the measures to be taken, but it is certain that, first and foremost, are the people, who are not to blame.”

“Costa da Caparica is where it is, with the risks it has, and it’s not worth pretending that people don’t live there”, recalled the mayor.

Tampering with the Costa da Caparica cliff is tampering with a national ecological reserve. Therefore, it is a “national matter, which cannot only be faced by the municipality of Almada”.

Os losses in Almada must reach the 16 million euros. But Inês de Medeiros warns that, if definitive stabilization of the cliff advances, this value could multiply by 10. “No minimum.”

“Just to try to open access to Porto Brandão, to open the road, contain the lands that are sliding and alleviate the pressure on some of the houses, that’s all, it’s R$ 2.5 million”, detailed Inês de Medeiros.
