Volkswagen Golf 2010

Volkswagen Golf had 20 owners, Mercedes-Benz C-Class registered in 5 countries, repairing a Porsche cost more than 67,000 euros.

Comprar one car is always synonymous with risks. Even a new car can cause problems, a used one even more so.

We have already highlighted that, in Portugal, there are many used cars with odometers.

But there are other issues to keep in mind. One of them is the number of times a car changes hands.

carVertical, an automotive data company, analyzed the most extreme cases in the used vehicle market in Portugal (all imported), throughout the first half of 2024.

This year’s record holder is a 2010 Volkswagen Golf, which has already had 20 owners.

Very close by is a similar model: Volkswagen Golf from 2005, with 17 owners; followed by a 2009 Audi A3, which has already had 16 owners.

These numbers are a warning: “If a car has already had many owners, worth investigating the reason. As a general rule, people change cars every 4–6 years, but a model that changes hands every year or every few months may have serious problems, says Matas Buzelis, Communications Director at carVertical.

“Drivers who buy imported cars run particular risks, because it can be difficult to identify the number of owners the vehicle has had. Fortunately, with the growing popularity of car history checking services, it is possible to access this information simply and immediately”, he continues, in a statement sent to ZAP.

This analysis also found that, in relation to cars that have already been registered in other countries, the one that stands out is a 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class: registered in 5 countries. A 2015 BMW 4 Series was registered in 4 countries.

In the accidents, the top model was a 2014 BMW 1 Series, which had already suffered 6 accidents of travel. Follows Tesla Model S from 2018, with 5 damage records.

O cost highest total damage in Portugal was recorded in a 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo: nothing less than 67 250 euros.

The 2008 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is the car that has traveled the most: 520,700 kilometers.

The biggest tampering with the odometer was in a 2009 Audi A3 – the odometer had been modified at 373,981 km.
