Zelensky believes that the war in Ukraine could end before the next US elections: “I think we have a chance”

Zelensky: "Today marks four years since Putin took kyiv in three days"

The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, dropped this Friday the possibility that the war with Russia will end before the holding of the next US midterm elections. ““Now I think we have a chance,” the leader stated in an interview with Sky News.

“Before the elections, important and influential elections in the United States. If it is possible to achieve peace, we will have it, now we have this opportunity,” he added, who wanted to remember the importance and role that the US power plays in this international conflict.

Regarding the situation facing Ukraine, Zelensky has pointed out that “it is very difficult today to recover all the territory” that his country has lost during the Russian aggression and has said that places like Sloviansk and Kramatorsk (located in the province of Donetsk) are red lines that they will not allow to lose.

“It is our territory, and it sounds incredibly strange that we have to withdraw from our land,” recalled Zelensky, who pointed out that a withdrawal would imply the transfer to prison of the Ukrainian soldiers who remain there or even their death. “Who told Russia that these people are ready to be Russian?” he stressed.

Despite this, the Ukrainian leader has made it clear that a victory for Ukraine does not have to be a victory as such. “It depends on what people mean when they talk about winning (…) The good thing is that Russia can’t do it on the battlefield either. That’s why they don’t win and we don’t lose,” he said.

He believes it is “useless” to talk about presidential elections

Another question that was in the air is whether Ukraine plans to hold elections during the course of the war, as demanded from Russia. However, the Ukrainian authorities have once again shelved this idea. “Talking about elections in the current circumstances is useless.”the head of the Ukrainian presidential office, Kirilo Budanov, has ruled out in an interview with the newspaper ‘Al Modon’.

Along these lines, the president of Ukraine indicated a couple of weeks ago that he would only hold elections assuming that “all adequate security guarantees exist.”
