The Vice President of the Republic, Geraldo Alckmin (PSD-SP), stated that the text of the safeguards of the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union has already been drawn up and forwarded to the Civil House.
Speaking to journalists this Friday (27) at a BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) event, Alckmin detailed that the text will pass through the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before the President’s signature.
“This agreement has a chapter focused on safeguards, but it needs to be regulated”, said the Vice President.
Despite the concern of some sectors, Alckmin argued that the opening of the market is to benefit society without harming national production.
“Some sectors are worried about the loss of market, but the logic of opening the market is for society to gain. If there is an import surge, we suspend the tax reduction, which will be regulated by the presidential decision”, he explained.
The Brazilian government’s proposal to regulate a protection system for national producers in sectors that could be impacted by competition from Europe began to be studied after the European Union mentioned proposing safeguards to Brazil. In the domestic market, some sectors, especially dairy and wine, fear losing market share.
