German chancellor Friedrich Merz on Sunday called on Iran to immediately stop its attacks on the Persian Gulf countries. He also expressed the assumption that the theocratic regime would fall after a military campaign by the United States and Israel. According to him, it is therefore necessary that Washington, together with its European partners, start preparing for future scenarios in the country and the region. TASR writes about it according to the AFP and Reuters agencies.
According to Merz, Iranians deserve a better future and many will be relieved to see the end of the regime. However, he pointed out that the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US and Israeli strikes on Tehran has set Iran on a path to an uncertain future.
“The risks are there. We don’t know how much the region will be dragged into escalation due to Iran’s tough counterstrikes.” said the German chancellor at a press conference. “Ultimately, we don’t know if this plan will succeed,” he said of US-Israeli strikes in which Germany did not participate.
Merz outlined four goals that now need to be achieved. According to him, it is necessary to ensure peace and stability in the region, to force Iran to end its nuclear and ballistic missile development programs, to contribute to Iran’s stable future and to help Iranians decide their own destiny. He also emphasized that Berlin will not tolerate any anti-Semitic or anti-American attacks on its territory.
