European Union threatens to react “quickly and decisively” if Trump carries out threats of customs tariffs

UE threatens to tax airplanes, cars and US beverages if they fail negotiations

“Unilateral measures against legitimate policies are unjustified”, denounced a spokesperson for the European Commission

The European Union assured this Friday that it will react “quickly and with determination” if the President of the United States, Donald Trump, decides to implement his new threats of 100% customs tariffs.

The North American president threatened to impose 100% tariffs on European countries that taxed digital services.

“Unilateral measures against legitimate policies are unjustified”, denounced a spokesperson for the European Commission.

Donald Trump threatened to impose 100% tariffs on European countries that implemented a tax on digital services, despite the trade agreement with the European Union that provides for a limit on tariffs.

“Many European countries are debating the imminent creation of a tax on digital services for American companies. (…) Any country that imposes such a tax will have the immediate response of a 100% tariff on all goods sent to the United States. This tariff will nullify the trade agreements made with the country” in question, wrote the American president on his Truth Social network.

This new gesture of pressure comes the day after the formal green light given by European Union countries to a trade agreement negotiated last year with the United States.

This agreement provides for a 15% limit on duties charged on European imports.

But this is not enough for Donald Trump, who wants to attack so-called “non-tariff” barriers, that is, European regulations, particularly in technology and the environment, which he believes hinder American exports.

It recently threatened to impose a 100% tariff on French wine if Paris did not eliminate the digital services tax required of technology companies.
