This Monday (2) the first ceremony to incorporate women into women’s initial military service took place. In total, 1,467 will be distributed across 51 municipalities in 13 states and , 157 in the Navy, 1,010 in the Army and 300 in the Air Force.
Women’s initial military service allows, on a voluntary basis, women, upon reaching the age of 18, to enter military service with the same rights and duties attributed to men.
Although enlistment is voluntary for women, upon incorporation, military service becomes mandatory for a period of one year. The event was held at the Planalto Military Command in , alongside the traditional male incorporation.
The entry of women into initial military service is treated as an institutional milestone and should have an impact on both the internal dynamics of the Forces and the profile of personnel over the coming years.
They are distributed in different regions of the country. In the North, the incorporations took place in Amazonas and Pará. In the Central-West, in the Federal District, in Goiás and in Mato Grosso do Sul.
In the South, the vacancies are in Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. In the Southeast, in Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. In the Northeast, incorporation occurred in Bahia, Ceará and Pernambuco.
On the occasion, the Minister of Defense, José Múcio, highlighted that, despite the high demand, with 33 thousand women trying to register, female military service will remain spontaneous, and not mandatory. He said that there is still no provision in the country for mandatory enlistment of women.
Another milestone celebrated by the minister was the promotion of the first Army General in the force’s history, colonel-doctor from Pernambuco Claudia Lima Gusmão Cacho.
We have already done that, there are already more advanced countries. I think it’s a victory for Brazilian society, not just for women”, said Múcio.
During the period of service, soldiers receive pay according to their rank, in addition to vacations, medical and hospital assistance, allowances, licenses and time counting for retirement purposes.
The contract will initially last for 12 months, with the possibility of extension for up to eight years, as long as vacancies are available, the soldier is interested in remaining in the corporation and approval by the respective Force.
