Israel expands offensive and attacks Tehran and Beirut; troops enter Lebanon by land

Israel launched simultaneous attacks against Tehran and Beirut this Tuesday morning (3), expanding the offensive in the Middle East after the United States embassy in Saudi Arabia was hit by drones during the early hours of the morning.

According to reports, columns of smoke were seen in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a stronghold of Hezbollah, a group supported by Iran. Videos posted online show multiple explosions in the Lebanese capital. Israel said the targets were Iranian military installations and Hezbollah positions.

Earlier, the Israel Defense Forces issued new evacuation warnings for parts of southern Lebanon, ordering residents to move at least 1,000 meters away from their villages. “Hezbollah’s activities are forcing the Israel Defense Forces to take strong action against it, and we have no intention of harming them,” said Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee. He added that anyone near the group’s facilities would be “putting their life at risk”.

A Lebanese official told Reuters that Israeli troops were carrying out incursions on parts of the border. Witnesses said the Lebanese army withdrew from at least seven forward operating positions along the dividing line.

Despite a ceasefire brokered by the United States in November 2024, Israel continues attacks against targets in Lebanon, alleging violations by Hezbollah, which the group denies.

The new round of bombings comes amid the escalation that began on Saturday (28), when the United States and Israel attacked Iran amid tensions over the country’s nuclear program. The offensive killed Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to Iranian state media.

In response, Iran launched missiles and drones at targets in Middle Eastern countries that host American military bases, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan and Iraq.

American and Israeli officials stated that the joint operation is far from over, signaling that the attacks are likely to continue in the coming days, amid the risk of an increase in the conflict in the region.
