Cutting is recommended between the second half and the beginning of April. Then, first of all, you should tidy up the bushes that were not trimmed before winter. Additionally, it’s worth it in spring inspect the bushes carefully and remove all frozen, dry or damaged shoots.
Such an inspection will allow you to quickly detect any signs of disease and improve air circulation inside the plant. Thanks to lavender it will thicken evenly and produce more flower buds.
However, we must be careful that cutting done in spring does not harm our plants. For this reason, you should be especially vigilant when it comes to buds which is very easy to damage. As a result, this may weaken the lavender flowering.
Moreover, before we start cutting, we must check whether the plant has already sprouted new shoots. In case we don’t see them yet, it may be better to wait a few days. In addition, remember not to remove the woody stems below the level of the leaves and to leave some young leaves on each stem.
Pruning should be done moderately, as shoots that are too short will not be able to grow back. This treatment is best performed on a dry and sunny day. Avoid cutting during rain, as this could increase the risk of fungal diseases.
Additionally, let’s take care of occupational hygiene. The tools we use for cutting should be disinfected beforehandso that we do not transmit pathogens.
