Mayor and deputy of Macapá are removed on suspicion of fraud in construction tenders

The Federal Police (PF) launched, this Wednesday morning, an operation to investigate an alleged fraud scheme in tenders signed by the Municipal Health Department of Macapá (AP). Among the targets are the mayor of the capital, Dr. Furlan (PSD), and the vice-mayor, Mario Neto (MDB), who were removed from their respective positions. Addresses linked to managers are also targets of search and seizure warrants, according to information from the g1 news portal.

Entitled “Operation Paroxysm”, the second phase of the police action complies with warrants issued by the Federal Supreme Court (STF), which ordered the removal of the public servants under investigation for a period of 60 days. There are 13 search and seizure warrants being carried out in the capitals Macapá, Belém (PA) and Natal (RN).

According to the PF, there is evidence of the existence of a “criminal scheme” that involves public agents, such as Furlan and Mario Neto, and businesspeople. The objective is to direct bids, divert public resources and launder money in the engineering project and execution of works for the city’s Municipal General Hospital.

This Tuesday, Furlan was in Brasília to announce his affiliation with the PSD, chaired by Gilberto Kassab. On social media, he published a video alongside the party leader, who called him “mayor” and said he was “very happy” to welcome him to the party.

— You, mayor, my dear Furlan, are very welcome at the PSDB. A party that is already by his side in his extraordinary management as head of Macapá city hall. A person with your qualifications makes the PSD feel very honored and valued in having someone with your stature as a member — said Kassab to Furlan, who left the MDB.

Furlan stated that the change of caption marks “a new moment, a new journey and the construction of a project always thinking about the greater good for the people”. The mayor was re-elected in 2024, with 85.08% of valid votes, the highest percentage among all Brazilian capitals.
