When you walk around the house without shoes, play dynamic sports outdoors or simply use white socks intensively, they lose their snowy hue over time. Gray socks are scary, so it pays to wash your favorite socks to keep them clean, fresh and shiny for as long as possible. I don’t use ready-made bleaches because they can destroy the delicate fibers after several washes. I have another way to restore the whiteness, aluminum foil comes in handy.

How to wash white socks?

Snow white socks change color very easily, especially when you use them intensively. Even with frequent washing in proven detergents, they can leave unsightly dark marks on the “bottom” of the socks.

If you happened to wash this item of clothing together with darker clothing, the result was definitely a loss of bright, clean color.

  • Interestingly, even contact with hard water can contribute to the loss of whiteness in your socks.
  • In addition, thanks to the properties of the material, comfortable cotton pairs get dirty faster and absorb sweat more easily, which leaves unsightly gray marks even with regular washing (and immediately after undressing).

How to restore the snow-white color of socks and make the gray “underneath” clean like a new pair you just brought from the store?

Here are the most common ways to whiten socks without using ready-made bleach. A few of them sound surprising, but all of them have the desired effect and at a really low cost. No more embarrassing problems when visiting friends, I will give you tips on how to wash white socks to make them look like new.

Whitening socks without bleach – home remedies

  • When washing this part of the garment, it is important not to mix colors, not to leave the socks inside out and always set the washing program to at least 40 °C.

Some people even recommend washing socks at 60°C, although I prefer to put them on a cycle with lower parameters and additionally bleach the socks beforehand.

You have probably already heard more than once about the whitening effect of white vinegar, lemon juice in a hot water bath, aspirin and in the fight against stubborn stains. However, my method is a little different, although it is based on simple, inexpensive, homemade products.

Want to know how to restore whiteness to socks without chemicals?

Whitening socks without bleach using the home method does not require much effort.

Prepare:

  • aluminum foil cut or torn into small strips
  • a large container (perhaps for cucumbers or compote) with a screw cap
  • washing powder that you use every day
  • baking soda
  • coarse salt

Now that you’re all set, instead of reaching for ready-made bleach, make your own sock bleach:

  1. Make balls out of pre-cut or torn aluminum foil. You can make 3 slightly larger or 5 smaller.
  2. Put the dirtiest socks that are difficult to wash into the container. Place between them some of the balls you prepared earlier – 2 bigger or 3 smaller.
  3. To top it all off, pour 1 large tablespoon of baking soda, 1 large tablespoon of salt, and the standard amount of washing powder that you usually add to the bowl when soaking dirty clothes into the bowl.
  4. Finally, add the remaining aluminum balls to the container thus filled.
  5. Pour boiling water into the container (be careful as freshly boiled water may burst). Close the glass container with the corresponding cap.
  6. The bath itself is not enough for the mixture of simple detergents to work, it is necessary to shake the container intensively. Do this several times or even several dozen times.
  7. Set aside the shaken mixture in a glass container for at least 10 minutes, so that the compounds activated in the water act on the impurities.

The gray bottom of the socks will be white again, as soon as you take them out of the bath after a certain time and throw them in the washing machine, choosing a standard washing program. Why are there foil balls in all this? Are you wondering what their effect is?

  • On the one hand, the irregular packaging rubs against the fabric, thereby breaking, separating and wiping away dirt that has collected on it.
  • On the other hand, they allow the active ingredients of the added substances to be mixed and distributed between the socks even better.

No more shades of grey. Washing white will put a smile on your face again
