There are road routes in Portugal that go unnoticed by most drivers. Even so, a national road has been asserting itself due to its natural surroundings and the driving experience it provides. By establishing a connection between two locations deeply linked to wine production, this section has attracted the attention of national and international experts.

According to Ekonomista, a website specializing in finance, the segment of National Road 222, measuring around 27 kilometers, is regularly highlighted as one of the most striking in the country. The route follows the Douro valley, combining successive curves with constant proximity to the river.

According to the same publication, the route integrates more than 90 curves throughout its development, following the course of the Douro River and crossing terraced vineyards integrated into the landscape classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Along the route there are several points that allow you to observe the valley from privileged angles.

International recognition

The notoriety of the EN222 crossed borders after its inclusion in a study promoted by an international car rental company, which analyzed roads on different continents. Among the criteria evaluated were the number of curves, the length of the straights and the fluidity of the driving.

The Portuguese section stood out for its balance between winding areas and more direct segments, providing an accessible experience without requiring a high technical level. In the same study, it received one of the highest rankings globally.

Another factor considered was the visual impact during the trip. The constant presence of the natural landscape contributed to the score achieved, since the scenic setting was one of the parameters analyzed.

Inserted in the Alto Douro Wine Region

The road crosses the Alto Douro Wine Region, a demarcated region recognized as a World Heritage Site. Along the route there are several Port wine producing farms and places with historical and cultural relevance.

Among the most popular spots is the Casal de Loivos Viewpoint, which offers a panoramic view of the valley. The proximity to Pinhão also allows you to visit the local train station, known for its tile panels alluding to Douro culture and traditions.

Despite growing recognition, traffic remains relatively moderate, being used mainly by residents and visitors linked to wine tourism, which contributes to smooth driving.

Use throughout the year

The EN222 has good traffic conditions and adequate signage, and can be traveled in any season of the year. Seasonal changes give distinct characteristics to the surrounding landscape.

In spring, the green tones of the vines predominate. During the summer, the intense light reflected from the river especially enhances the route at the end of the day. In autumn, the slopes take on golden and reddish tones, creating a visually distinct and more serene environment.

Among the various panoramic roads in Portugal, this section of the EN222 has established itself as one of the most emblematic. According to , the balance between driving fluidity and visual richness has consolidated its reputation among national and foreign visitors.
