White House asked Kiev for support to protect itself from Iranian drones. Zelenskyy provides conditioned assistance.
The United States was the largest bilateral provider of military aid to Ukraine – before Donald Trump’s return to leadership of the White House in January 2025.
Since Trump became president again, this aid has been substantially reduced as Washington began peace talks between Kiev and Moscow, and replaced with European support.
But now, the United States calls for support for Ukraine: to protect themselves from iranian drones in full conflict in .
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed in the post: “We have received a request from the United States for specific support in protecting against the Shahed in the Middle East.”
Zelenskyy indicated that he had already ordered the supply of “necessary resources” and of “Ukrainian experts” to respond to this request for security assistance.
“Ukraine supports partners who help ensure our security and protect the lives of our people,” he added in his message.
But the support is calculated: “Of course, any assistance what we provide will only be conditioned, one that does not weaken our own defense in Ukraine and that serves as an investment in our diplomatic capabilities: we help protect from war those who help us — Ukraine — to bring the war to a dignified conclusion.”
Ukraine has considerable experience countering Shahed drones, as Russia makes extensive use of these devices — originally designed by Iran but since manufactured in Russian industry — to bomb Ukrainian territory. Almost every night, hundreds of these drones are launched into Ukraine.
Without the resources to shoot them down, the Ukrainians developed a range of cheap and effective interceptor drones, considered among the most advanced in the world and capable of destroying them in mid-flight.
Donald Trump, when asked about this Ukrainian aid, reacted: “I will accept any help from any country.”
