Joel Borges Correa was sentenced by the STF to 13 years and 6 months in prison for participating in the acts in Brasília
Argentina’s (National Commission for Refugees) considered Brazilian Joel Borges Correa a refugee in the country. The decision, defined on January 4, represents the first time that the Argentine government has granted this status to someone involved in the January 8, 2023 coup attempt.
Correa was sentenced by the STF (Supreme Federal Court) to 13 years and 6 months in prison. In 2024, he was detained along with 4 other Brazilians in Argentine territory, after leaving Brazil.
Under house arrest since December 2024, the Brazilian is now awaiting removal from Conare monitoring. To the Poder360Luciano Cunha, Correa’s defense lawyer, said that the commission’s decision is of a “definitive”.
According to his defense, the Brazilian is eligible for Argentine citizenship and must remain in Buenos Aires alone. At this moment, he is not accompanied by any family member.
Conare is an administrative body that operates within the Argentine Executive Branch, and is not part of the Judiciary Branch.
