The Gulf Stream is part of a vast heat conveyor belt that transports warm surface water from the tropics toward the North Atlantic. It therefore has a significant influence on Europe’s climate. This system is called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC for short, and it works like a cycle: the warm water releases heat into the atmosphere, cools, becomes denser, sinks into the depths and flows south again as a deep current.
