President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) is expected to appoint economist Bruno Moretti as the new minister of the Ministry of Planning and Budget. The information was published by Folha de S.Paulobased on reports from the president’s interlocutors.

The change will occur after the departure of the current holder of the portfolio, Simone Tebet (MDB), who must leave the position by March 30 to contest this year’s elections. Tebet is negotiating to transfer his electoral domicile from Mato Grosso do Sul to São Paulo, where he can run for the Senate within the political alliance that supports Lula.

Moretti currently occupies the Special Secretariat for Government Analysis of the Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic. In this position, he participates directly in discussions on fiscal policy, preparation of the Budget and analysis of federal government programs and measures.

As he works in the strategic core of Palácio do Planalto, the economist maintains frequent contact with the president. According to a minister interviewed by the SheetMoretti has Lula’s trust and usually consults with the head of the Executive on different topics on the economic agenda.

Having worked in the planning and budgeting career since 2004, Moretti has held different technical and management roles in the federal government. During the government transition, in 2022, he was part of the discussions that resulted in the approval of the so-called Transition PEC in Congress.
