Divided into five episodes, the series follows for the first time Rose’s complete version of the episode that marked her personal and professional trajectory
Naked on the Net: The Truth About Rose Leonel, new documentary series from HBO and the HBO Max platform, brings to light one of the most impactful stories involving digital crimes in Brazil. The production premiered on March 10 and revisits the case of journalist Rose Leonel, whose life was profoundly affected after having intimate images published without consent on the internet.
Divided into five episodes, the series follows the complete version of Rose for the first time about the episode that marked his personal and professional trajectory. In the 2000s, after ending a relationship, the Columnist had more than 400 intimate photos spread online by his ex-partnersome of them manipulated, in one of the first cases of non-consensual dissemination of intimate images to gain repercussion in the country.
A Exposure had devastating consequences. Living in a small town, Rose faced public judgment, lost job opportunities and saw personal relationships break down. At the time, Brazil did not yet have specific legislation to deal with digital crimes of this type, which made the fight for justice even longer and more difficult.
But the case ended up becoming a legal landmark. After nearly a decade of legal battles, the Rose’s mobilization contributed to changes in Brazilian legislationincluding the change in the law that began to recognize and criminalize the violation of privacy, a measure that became known informally as “She Rose Leonel”.
In addition to revisiting the trauma, the documentary also shows the journalist’s reconstruction process. After transforming her own pain into activism, she founded the NGO Marias da Internet, an organization that offers guidance and support to victims of digital crimes.
Directed by Luiza de Andrade and Bia Vilela, the production relies on a sensitive approach centered on the victim’s perspectiveavoiding the sensationalism common in true crime narratives. The result is a powerful portrait of privacy, digital violence and the real impact that the internet can have on a person’s life.
More than revisiting a shocking case, “Nua na Rede” presents itself as an important document about the challenges of the digital age and how a personal story can bring about changes that affect the entire society.
