Security agents kill synagogue attacker in Michigan | International

The Michigan State Police decreed this Thursday, after noon (local time, seven more in peninsular Spain), the confinement to a mile around a synagogue in West Bloomfield (Michigan). An armed man had rammed his truck into the huge Temple Israel compound, which also has a school. Then, a shootout began with security agents, who killed the attacker. One of the officers was injured, although the extent of those injuries was not immediately clear.

State police confirmed about an hour later that there were no more deaths or injuries.

The FBI director wrote in X that the suspect “apparently rammed his car” into the synagogue building. With 12,000 members, it is the largest in Michigan and one of the largest in the United States. CNN later reported that the man was carrying explosives in the trunk of his truck.

Michael Bouchard, sheriff of Oakland County, actually a suburb north of Detroit, the most populous city in the state, said in an impromptu press conference broadcast live on news networks, that synagogue security had been reinforced after the start of the Iran war almost three weeks ago. Also, that alerts about possible attacks had been issued in recent days.

The governor of this Midwestern state, Democrat Gretchen Whitmer, issued a statement, in which she described the attack as “heartbreaking.” “The Jewish community of Michigan should be able to live and practice their faith in peace.”

In a second appearance on the street, Bouchard said that the authorities had reinforced the security of synagogues and other meeting centers of the Jewish community, not because of specific threats, but because of “an excess of caution.”
