Italian court rejects appeal against changes in granting citizenship

The new rules limit recognition to two generations of people born outside the country and determine that applications will be evaluated in Rome

According to the new rules, Italian-Brazilians will not be able to pass on their citizenship to their descendants

The Constitutional Court of Italy rejected this Thursday (12) an appeal presented by the Court of Turin alleging unconstitutionality in the new rules for granting Italian citizenship. The measure imposed by a decree-law by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, limits the recognition of two generations born outside the country.

Another change is that the descendant who requests recognition cannot have another nationality. In this way, Italian-Brazilians will no longer be able to pass on their citizenship.

. Approved by the Italian Parliament, the measure came into force on February 19.

In addition to the restriction of generations and nationality, from 2029, the recognition procedure will be concentrated in Rome. Therefore, local consulates will no longer offer the citizenship granting service.
