According to GNR data released this Friday, there has been an increase in accidents associated with micromobility, namely electric scooters, which have already been recorded since the beginning of the year and until February 28, 72 accidents.
“Until 2021, the accident record remained stable (below 25 annual occurrences), however, there was a significant increase in 2023, with 547 accidents, reaching the peak in 2024, with 706 occurrences”, indicates the guard.
In the last seven years (from 2019 to 2025), the GNR recorded 10 fatalities, half of which in 202388 serious injuries and 1,442 minor injuries (reaching a maximum of 548 in 2024).
Setúbal with the highest number of deaths
According to the data, the district of Setúbal was the one that recorded the highest number of fatalities (three) and Santarém 14 seriously injured in the last 7 years.
The GNR points out the main causes of accidents circulation in inappropriate places (sidewalks), disregard for signage and failure to use safety and protection devices.
Given this scenario, the GNR, he says, has developed inspection actions aimed at these users, promoting awareness of the adoption of defensive driving.
In the note, the guard recalls that electric scooters are equated to bicycles, Its users must comply with the rules established in the Highway Code.
A GNR recommends the use of a helmetalthough this is not mandatory for all scooters, retroreflective use and that users check that the vehicle has white lights at the front and red lights at the rear.
Also remember that scooters are prohibited on sidewalksand they must use the cycle paths or, in their absence, the carriageway (next to the shoulder) and avoid sudden maneuvers and signaling changes of direction with their arm.
The guard also warns that scooter drivers are subject to the same alcohol taxes as those on cars and that scooters are intended to transport only one person.
