Five people were injured in Sunday’s rocket attack on Baghdad’s international airport, which also houses a US diplomatic facility that was hit on Wednesday. This was reported by AFP with reference to the Iraqi authorities.
A total of five rockets targeted the airport and its surroundings, which, among other things, hit the desalination plant, while others landed near the prisonwhere suspected members of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization are being heldand an Iraqi air base.
Four airport employees and one technician were injured in this attack. Security forces seized the launch pad used in the attack southwest of Baghdad, authorities added. Security sources told AFP that three drones were also shot down near the airport.
Part of the Baghdad airport is a large military complex, which is divided into several parts used by the Iraqi army and security forces, as well as the American diplomatic support center.
After the start of American and Israeli attacks on Iran more than two weeks ago, Iraq closed its airspace and suspended air traffic. American bases in Iraq and the airport in Baghdad have been daily targets of missile and drone attacks since then, which are reported by armed groups supported by Tehran.
Iraq’s Justice Ministry warned on Sunday that attacks near the airport threatened the security of Karch Central Prison, which houses thousands of suspected IS members who were recently transferred from Syria.
