Unlike his competitors, Sean Penn ran a practically non-existent campaign at the Oscars, without giving interviews or appearing at other awards shows during the season. He competed for the statuette with “One Battle After Another” co-star Benicio del Toro, Jacob Elordi (“Frankenstein”), Stellan Skarsgård (“Sentimental Value”) and Delroy Lindo (“Sinners”).
According to information from the American magazine Variety, Sean Penn was thinking about spending five hours at the awards ceremony without being able to smoke.
At this year’s Golden Globes, he was caught smoking, which was frowned upon at the event.
Penn’s other two awards at the ceremony were for Best Actor for “Of Boys and Wolves” in 2004 and for “Milk: The Voice of Equality” in 2009.
