After negotiations, Russia promised to stop recruiting Kenyans to fight in Ukraine

According to the Kenyan minister, Russia has promised to stop the recruitment of Kenyans to the front in Ukraine. For a long time, the media drew attention to their forced recruitment and poor training.

Russia has agreed to stop recruiting Kenyan citizens to fight with its army in Ukraine. This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kenya on Monday after talks with the Russian departmental partner in Moscow, reports TASR according to the AFP agency.

According to Kyiv’s February estimates, more than 1,780 citizens of 36 African countries are fighting for Russia in Ukraine. Several media outlets, including AFP, have recently reported on the forced recruitment of Kenyans by Moscow, which, according to reports, sends them to the front line with only limited training.

Kenyans dragged away

The East African country’s intelligence services estimate that more than 1,000 Kenyans have been sent to fight.

“We agreed that Kenyans should not join the army,” Kenyan Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi told reporters at a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Russia’s reaction

Lavrov did not mention the deal in a statement to the media, but said the Russian Defense Ministry was investigating the cases that had caused “concern among our Kenyan friends.” “Russia does not force anyone to enlist. As in the case of participation in a special military operation, volunteers enter this operation in full compliance with Russian law,” the Russian minister said.
