The airstrike on Tehran’s Evin prison by the Israeli army in June 2025 was a war crime. This follows from the conclusions of a commission of independent experts, whose review was commissioned by the UN Human Rights Council. The DPA agency informed about it on Monday, writes TASR.
In a report presented on Monday in Geneva by a trio of legal experts monitoring the situation in Iran for the United Nations, it is stated that the attack on the prison in June 2025, which killed approximately 80 people, was not a legitimate military target. Evín is notorious for holding political prisoners.
Israel’s mission to the UN in Geneva said it would likely publish a response to this accusation against Israel on Tuesday. Based on an expert report, Israel previously defended the operation as a crackdown on the oppression of the local population in Iran and anti-Israeli espionage activities allegedly taking place on the prison premises.
The chairwoman of the UN expert commission, Sara Hossain, told journalists in Geneva, that continued military intervention by the United States and Israel is unlikely to bring lasting political change to Iran. She warned that “on the contrary, it can lead to an increase in violence by the state, which regularly resorts to repressive measures to suppress dissent.”
At the same time, UN experts accused the Iranian authorities of serious violations of human rights, which, according to them, may amount to crimes against humanity. The report states that these include, for example, killings, arbitrary detention, torture, sexual violence and the prosecution of women.
