José Dirceu should bring together politicians at his 80th birthday party in Brasília

Celebration will be this Tuesday (17th March); authorities attended celebrations for the former minister and historic leader of the PT in the federal capital for the last 2 years

The former Minister of the Civil House will hold a party this Tuesday (17th March 2026) celebrating his 80th birthday, which ended on Monday (16th March). The event will be at 8pm, in a restaurant in Asa Sul, in Brasília. The expectation is to welcome politicians from different spectrums.

One of PT’s historic leaders, Dirceu also brought together authorities at events that celebrated his birthday and . At these parties, the former federal deputy demonstrated strength with the participation of ministers and congressmen.

On Sunday (Mar 15), José Dirceu for 500 people in a noble hall in Parque São Jorge, in Tatuapé, east zone of São Paulo. There were online tickets, which are sold out.

He even said that Brazil’s sovereignty. He also criticized the governor of São Paulo, (Republicans), and the PL pre-candidate for President, the senator from Rio de Janeiro.

The militants were present to support the former minister, who is running for federal deputy for São Paulo in 2026. He was in office from 1991 to 1995 and from 1999 to 2005, when he was elected for 2 consecutive terms.

The former PT president told the Poder360 that the decision was taken at the invitation of the president. “I am a pre-candidate, at the request and invitation of President Lula. I returned to the National Directory and am already carrying out a pre-campaign within the law and TSE resolutions”he stated in an interview.

The Workers’ Party is counting on Dirceu to be a vote-getter for the party in the Chamber this year. The significant vote that supporters expect would help the party to elect more deputies in the State.

POLITICAL TRAJECTORY

Dirceu is one of the founders of PT. He presided over the party from 1995 to 2002. He held elected positions and in the federal government:

  • state deputy for São Paulo (1987-1991);
  • federal deputy for São Paulo (from 1991 to 1995 and from 1999 to 2005);
  • Minister of the Civil House during Lula’s first term, from 2003 to 2005.

PRISON

Dirceu spent 1 year and 9 months in prison in Curitiba (PR) at the behest of the now closed Lava Jato operation. He was released on May 3, 2017.

In October 2024, Federal Supreme Court minister Gilmar Mendes da Lava Jato against the former minister. With the decision, he regained his political rights and was no longer considered “dirty record”.

RETURN

In 2023, after the election of President Lula, Dirceu had already returned to traveling more freely around Brasília. He speaks to many members of the PT administration and regained influence in the party.

He also spoke again to Lula, from whom he had been away for years. He was one of the main political articulators in the first term of the Chief Executive and was considered a super minister.
