Calendar unchanged: FIFA refuses Iran's request to play World Cup in Mexico

Following Iran’s request not to hold games in the United States, FIFA expressed its desire to keep the World Cup calendar unchanged.

This Tuesday, a spokesperson for the organization stated that the FIFA expects “all participating teams to compete in accordance with the game calendar”which was announced on December 6, 2025.

According to the same source, the FIFA “is in regular contact with all member associations participating in the World Cupincluding the Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI), to discuss the planning of the World Cup”.

Iran Football Federation aimed to transfer games to Mexico

This morning the Iranian Football Federation revealed that it is in negotiations for its team to play the Group G games of the 2026 World Cup in Mexico, instead of in the United States.

The diplomatic mission explained that before “due to the lack of cooperation from the US Government in issuing visas and providing logistical support to Iran’s national football team in preparation for the 2026 World Cup, Abolfazl Psedniddeh, Iranian ambassador to Mexico, suggested to FIFA that Iran’s games at that event be transferred from the United States to Mexico“.

O Iran is in Group G of the tournamentalong with the teams from Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand.

The team coached by Amir Ghalenoei is scheduled to debut against New Zealand on June 15th, in Inglewood, with a second game against Belgium on the 21st, in the same Californian city.

The Iranians’ last meeting in the group stage is scheduled for June 26, against Egypt, in Seattle, United States.
