A bill approved by the Legislative Assembly that ensures the right to breastfeeding and breastfeeding in public and private daycare centers was sanctioned by the governor (Republicans).
Authored by the deputy, they have guaranteed the right to receive breast milk, directly from the breast or after storage.
The new law determines that daycare centers must guarantee adequate conditions for breastfeeding, including adapting kitchens and providing spaces for expressing and storing milk.
The legislation includes training early childhood education professionals on the benefits of breastfeeding, breastfeeding techniques and ways to support breastfeeding women. The proposal also encourages educational actions.
“We are talking about guaranteeing a basic right, which directly impacts children’s health and also the autonomy and real conditions for women to breastfeed. This cannot be a privilege for a few daycare centers and women, it needs to be a right guaranteed by the State”, says Helou.
According to data from the 2019 National Study of Child Food and Nutrition (Enani), only 45.7% of Brazilian children up to six months old are exclusively breastfed.
