They decided to break with a decades-old tradition and will not hold a large unified May Day event this year in São Paulo.
The guidance for unions, approved by the entities, is to mark the date in a decentralized way, with demonstrations located across the country.
“We are going to innovate and return to our roots”, says the president of CUT, Sérgio Nobre. general secretary of Força Sindical, the idea is to strengthen the bases at a time when important topics such as reducing working hours and regulating work through applications are discussed.
“We want to see hundreds, thousands of acts throughout Brazil. Each union must call its base and promote the date in the way it finds most convenient”, says Juruna.
In recent years, the six main unions (CUT, Força Sindical, UGT, CTB, CBS and Nova) have organized large Labor Day demonstrations, in places such as Praça Charles Miller, Vale do Anhangabaú and Praça Campo de Bagatelle, in São Paulo. In general, with the presence of politicians, ministers and President Lula.
There were also fiascos, such as the empty 2024 event, in the Neo Química Arena parking lot.
In this election year, the act could have a special meaning to promote Lula’s candidacy, but the centrals decided to officially position themselves later. “At the right time in the electoral campaign, the centers will speak out”, says Nobre.
While giving up the unified act of May Day, the centers intend to invest in a march in Brasília scheduled for April 15th.
The forecast is to bring together 10,000 people at an event on the Esplanada, followed by the delivery of a list of demands to Lula and the presidents of the Chamber, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), and the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP).
Topics will also include – right to negotiate over public servants, end of pejotização
“It’s a painful decision, we are used to having a unified May Day event, with a large mobilization. But it is a mature decision. We are going to invest in the march. We will all be committed, carry the 6×1 agenda, and we will be received by the president”, says Ricardo Patah, president of UGT.
