Youth advocates warn against a blanket ban on social media for children

The social media ban for children in Austria is on the home stretch. The federal government is close to an agreement. The age restriction should be discussed in the Council of Ministers as soon as possible. However, the child and youth advocates (Kija) warn against a hasty decision. Because a blanket ban would have a serious impact on children’s rights, says Salzburg children’s lawyer Johanna Fellinger. Instead, the Kijas demand that existing rules be consistently implemented and the platforms regulated. EU-wide solutions are needed and children’s media literacy must be promoted.
