A diplomacy is rarely simple with Donald Trump. And he demonstrated this again this Thursday (19) during the visit to the White House by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichibefore whom recalled the Japanese attack on the American base at Pearl Harbor.

Trump and Takaichi were answering questions from the press in the Oval Office before holding a bilateral meeting, when a Japanese journalist asked the President of the United States why he did not warn its allies about the start of the war in Iran. Trump then argued that he wanted to maintain the “surprise factor”.

And, surprisingly, what Trump would say next: “Who knows surprises better than Japan?” he said. “Why didn’t you tell me about Pearl Harbor?”

A the shadow of a grimace seemed to cross the face of the Japanese prime ministerwho simply leaned back in the armchair.

Japan carried out a surprise attack on the United States Navy at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941, which led to the United States’ entry into World War II.

Japan surrendered in 1945, after being the target of the first and last two atomic bombs used in history, in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which caused 214 thousand deaths.

For many Japanese, the attack on Pearl Harbor was a mistake that only brought destruction to their country..
