Lula says vice position is open for Alckmin – 03/19/2026 – Politics

The president () declared, on Thursday night (19), that the vice position in his candidacy for re-election is open to the current occupant, (), but that it will be up to the pessebista to choose – whether again to the Executive or to the Senate.

“I will be immensely happy to have Alckmin as vice-president again”, said Lula at the Metalworkers’ Union and to the Government of São Paulo.

“If he [Alckmin] If you’re my deputy, Haddad, I’ll be calm. But we need to put together a senatorial ticket to compete with us, and they [da direita] They don’t have a senator to compete with us. I don’t know if Geraldo will be a candidate for the Senate, but the vice position is open for you”, declared Lula.

The PT member also announced that one of the Senate seats will be contested by the minister (Planning), who will change her electoral domicile from Mato Grosso do Sul to São Paulo and exchange it for the PSB.

“I know that Simone Tebet will be one of the candidates for senator here,” said Lula.

The PT member added that Alckmin will be responsible for discussing with Haddad the best option for the 2026 elections.

Criticism of the BC

At the event, Lula also criticized the former president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, by associating him with the Banco Master scandal. Earlier, in a morning agenda, the president had complained about the cut of just 0.25 in the Selic rate – he expected a greater reduction.

“This Master Bank, they are trying to push the PT and the government behind. This bank is the egg of the snake of Bolsonaro and Roberto Campos. And we will leave no stone unturned to investigate everything they did, this 50 billion hole in this country. If we are not careful, Haddad, they will try to say that it is us”, said Lula.

“The person who recognized the bank in September 2019 was Roberto Campos, and all the frauds were carried out by him. We have to get to the bottom of it, and the PT bench has to have the courage to report it”, added the PT member.

For Haddad’s announcement, the PT prepared an event full of its staff, with federal and state deputies, councilors and historic PT members, such as former minister José Dirceu, as well as ministers Luiz Marinho (Labour), Camilo Santana (Education), Paulo Teixeira (Agrarian Development), Guilherme Boulos (General Secretariat) and Alckmin.

Also present were Nadia Campeão, national president of PC do B; Beto Tripoli, state president of PV; and state deputy Caio França, state president of the PSB. Everyone was called to the stage to join the ministers.

“This is the beginning of a broad coalition that we will build here in São Paulo”, declared Kiko Celeguim, federal deputy and state president of the PT.

HOMAGE

Before the pre-campaign event, Lula participated in a tribute to Pepe Mujica, president of Uruguay who died in 2025. Mujica received the title of doctor honoris causa, in memoriam, from the Federal University of ABC, in São Bernardo do Campo.

Lula read a letter sent to him by Mujica, in which the Uruguayan spoke in favor of regional integration as a “Bolivarian dream forgotten in time.” The PT member criticized the United States, at a time marked by the interference of Donald Trump’s government in different countries around the world, such as Venezuela and Iran. “It is not possible for us not to be aware that it is not others who will solve our problems”, he stated.

He also cited the period of Portuguese colonization, marked by gold exploration, and said that foreigners want to do the same with Brazilian rare earths. “They want to exploit us and do the same thing they did with gold.”

He called Mujica his brother and companion and also paid tribute to his companion, the former vice president of Uruguay Lucía Topolansky, who went to the event to receive the honor on Mujica’s behalf.
