Trump considers taking Kharg island to force Iran to open Hormuz, says Axios

The Trump administration is considering plans to occupy or blockade the Iranian island of Kharg to pressure Iran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Axios reported Friday, citing four sources with knowledge of the matter.

The island, a hub that accounts for around 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports, is located approximately 30 kilometers off the Iranian coast. It was hit hard by US airstrikes last weekend.

The place is considered a strategic point in Hormuz, as it also serves as an observation point for vessels passing through the strait.
