Donald Trump talks about withdrawing from the Middle East, but the Pentagon is increasing the military presence and the White House is asking for billions more in war funding.
US President Donald Trump has said that the United States is considering a “phase-out” of its military operation in the Middle East. His statement, however, appears to contradict the actions of his government, which is sending more soldiers and warships to the region and at the same time asking Congress for an additional 200 billion dollars (172 billion euros) to finance the war, writes the AP agency.
Trump made the announcement Friday night on his Truth Social social network, after rising oil prices again sent the U.S. stock market sharply lower. The American president emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz should be guarded by other countries that use this strategic route.
“We are very close to achieving our goals and are considering phasing out our major military efforts in the Middle East vis-a-vis the Iranian terrorist regime,” Trump wrote. “The Strait of Hormuz will have to be guarded and controlled as needed by other nations that use it – not the United States!” he added.
