At least 64 people have been killed in an attack on a medical facility in Sudanthe World Health Organization (WHO) said on Saturday. TASR informs about it according to the reports of the AFP and DPA agencies. The attack took place in the Sudanese state of East Darfur. Among the casualties are many children, medical staff and patients.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus specified that the hospital is out of service as a result of the attack, which took place on Friday, which means a critical interruption of essential health care for the area. The number of victims in connection with attacks on hospitals in the war in Sudan currently exceeded 2000.
Tedros specified that the attack took place in the city of al-Dhain, the capital of East Darfur, and the local faculty hospital. At least 64 people lost their lives, including 13 children, and another 89 people were injured. The hospital’s pediatric department, as well as the maternity ward and the emergency room, were damaged.
“Enough blood has been spilled. Enough suffering has been caused. The time has come to de-escalate the conflict in Sudan and ensure the protection of civilians, health and aid workers,” said Tedros, adding that healthcare should never be under attack.
Sudanese human rights group Emergency Lawyers said that the hospital was hit by a Sudanese army drone attack, which regularly attacks al-Dhaín controlled by paramilitary forces.
Sudan has been wracked by war since April 2023, with fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Force (RSF) paramilitary. The United Nations (UN) called this conflict the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world. Approximately 12 million people have been displaced as a result, and half the population is facing faminewhile tens of thousands of people have already died.
