Postponed meeting of José Luís Carneiro with the president of Venezuela

Postponed meeting of José Luís Carneiro with the president of Venezuela

The hearing between the secretary general of the PS and the president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez, was postponed due to a last-minute unforeseen event, and is pending confirmation of a new date and time, José Luís Carneiro told Lusa.

“We were informed that the president had to travel urgently to La Guaira. Today we will have a meeting with the community in Los Teques and a meeting with the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Yván Gil, is planned,” said Carneiro.

The audience with Delcy Rodríguez was not included in the program for the PT member’s visit to Caracas, having been scheduled by her on Saturday and then postponed.

However, the scheduled meeting with Minister Yván Gil, also initially scheduled for Saturday, was rescheduled for this afternoon, after the arrival in the country of the Venezuelan ruler, who was outside Caracas.

José Luís Carneiro has addressed two issues with Venezuelan officials: “Requesting the release of Portuguese-Venezuelan political detainees and drawing attention to the need for Venezuelan authorities to ensure the safety and tranquility of the Portuguese and Portuguese-Venezuelan community that remains in the country”, an official PS source told Lusa on Saturday.

The PS leader also intends to “express availability to promote interparliamentary cooperation, with a view to a peaceful political transition capable of giving Venezuela a future of stability.”

The PS secretary general arrived in Caracas on Thursday night for a four-day visit to Venezuela, where he will maintain contacts at various levels with local authorities and Portuguese people from the states of Miranda, Aragua, Carabobo and La Guaira.

The socialist leader is accompanied on this trip by the president of the PS parliamentary group, Eurico Brilhante Dias, and by the person responsible for the PS’s Portuguese Communities department, Paulo Pisco.

The Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities, Emídio Sousa, also announced on Wednesday that he will visit Venezuela between March 31 and April 2, where he will have meetings with local authorities and meetings with the Portuguese community.

After the capture of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, during a military operation on January 3, the United States and Venezuela established an agreement at the beginning of the month to “restore diplomatic and consular relations”.

Subsequently, on March 10, the State Department notified the New York court responsible for the case against Maduro that it had formally recognized Delcy Rodríguez as Venezuela’s head of state.
