Justice blocks Reconquista leader’s bank accounts. Afonso Gonçalves investigated

Authorities are investigating anti-immigration activist Afonso Gonçalves for hate crimes. Other members of the group are also in the sights of Portuguese justice.

According to , the Public Ministry (MP) requested the blocking of all bank accounts that are in the name of Afonso Gonçalves.

The requests would have come from Porto’s Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DIAP), which will be investigating suspicions of the practice of hate crimes by the leader of the Reconquista group.

As the CM writes, authorities believe that the target’s bank accounts were being used to circulate money that served to finance activities of the movement he leads, associated with the far right.

“The activity I had in my accounts was normal and legitimate. Now my life is on hold,” the 25-year-old complained to the morning newspaper, considering that he is “to be treated unfairly and illegally, in an attack on freedom of expression”.

Other members of the group are also in the sights of Portuguese justice, with some of their bank accounts also blocked by order of the MP.

Afonso Gonçalves is very active on social media, namely on X, where he also asks his followers to support him financiallythrough donations to MBWay or PayPal.

The Reconquista disseminates racist and xenophobic ideasdefending the “purity” of the Portuguese people and the reducing the rights of women and LGBTQI+ people.

Afonso Gonçalves is gone.
