This week, the Ministry of Education (MEC) opened the deadline for joining Desenrola Fies 2026, a student loan debt renegotiation program with discounts that can reach 99% of the outstanding balance. The initiative is valid for contracts signed until 2017 and includes students who were in the financing amortization phase on May 4 of this year.
Renegotiation can be done until December 31, 2026 with Caixa Econômica Federal or Banco do Brasil, responsible for the Student Financing Fund (Fies) contracts. The program provides for different rebates depending on the length of time the debt is overdue and the student’s socioeconomic situation, in addition to the possibility of paying in installments over up to 150 months.
Created in 2001, the Student Financing Fund finances undergraduate courses in private higher education institutions with a positive evaluation in the National Higher Education Assessment System (Sinaes). To participate in the program, the student must have taken the National High School Exam (Enem) from 2010 onwards.
Who can join Desenrola Fies?
Students who contracted Fies until 2017 and were in the amortization phase on May 4, 2026 can participate. According to the MEC, the date — May 4 — was defined to check which contracts were in the amortization phase and to analyze criteria such as time of default and registration in CadÚnico.
It is worth noting that the program includes both current and non-performing contracts, as long as they meet the criteria defined by the federal government. Students who contracted financing from January 1, 2018 cannot join. Contracts that are still in the use or grace period are also excluded.
