The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, again called this Sunday (22) for the return of economic sanctions on Russian oil, which, according to him, is helping to finance the war efforts of Vladimir Putin’s government. “Due to sanctions relief, the Russia increased its crude oil sales to finance the war. The proceeds give Russia a sense of impunity and the ability to continue the war. That is why the pressure must continue and the sanctions must work,” said the Ukrainian leader in a post on X.

According to Zelensky, the Russia has launched nearly 1,550 drones, more than 1,260 guided aerial bombs and two missiles against Ukraine over the past week. “Russia’s clandestine fleet cannot feel safe in European waters or anywhere else. Oil tankers serving the war budget can and should be detained and blocked, not just released,” he added.

Part of the sanctions against Russian oil was lifted by the United States on the 12thamid the shock in the price of the commodity caused by Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and the uncertainties generated by the war in the Middle East. In the decision, the Trump administration temporarily authorized the sale of Russian oil that was sitting on ships at sea.
